FAQs

What is a Doctor of Osteopathy or D.O.?

Just like an M.D., a D.O. is a fully trained and Board certified physician who is licensed to prescribe medication, perform surgery, and practice medicine. A D.O. will use the same methods to diagnose and treat your symptoms; however, they place a special emphasis on using non-surgical manual manipulation to restore proper body alignment, flexibility, and strength.

What is Non-Surgical Osteopathic Manual Manipulation?

Dr. Khyber Zaffarkhan uses his hands and his extensive knowledge of the human body to diagnose and treat problems with the skeletal system, muscles, nerves, and blood flow. Trained in many different types of osteopathic manipulation, he puts the skeletal structures back into alignment using appropriate manipulation techniques. Once aligned, the nerves can stop being pinched, muscles will relax, and blood flow is normalized so the body can begin to heal itself.

How Does it Differ from Chiropractic Treatment?

Chiropractors focus all of their attention on vertebral subluxations, or misalignments of the spine. In addition to correcting skeletal alignment, Dr. Khyber Zaffarkhan uses non-surgical osteopathic manual manipulation to care for your muscles, tendons, nerves, and blood flow. As a fully licensed, Board certified physician, Dr. Zaffarkhan prescribes medication and creates a personalized treatment plan to manage your recovery.

What Can I Expect During a Consultation with Dr. Zaffarkhan?

Dr. Zaffarkhan will spend time with you taking a thorough personalized history and answering all of your questions. He will perform a physical, assess your current symptoms, and develop a customized treatment plan. If necessary, Dr. Z will prescribe medication and order necessary diagnostic tests.

How Many Doctor’s Appointments Will I Need?

Every patient’s circumstance is different. Some patients feel immediate relief from just one treatment. The best results from non-surgical manual manipulation comes from patients with acute musculoskeletal pain (for example, pain existing for three months or less). Most of these patients experience relief within three to five visits. If they do not, Dr. Zaffarkhan will recommend further testing or approach the challenge in a different way.

Will My Insurance Pay for This?

Dr. Zaffarkhan and his team at the Regenerative Institute of Newport Beach accept most PPO insurance plans. Most insurance plans pay for the office visit and the manual manipulation treatment. Others may only pay for the office visit. Please check with your insurance company or contact our office to verify what procedures and / or treatments are covered.

Does Dr. Zaffarkhan Prescribe Pain Medication?

Yes, Dr. Khyber Zaffarkhan can prescribe his patients medication, just like an M.D. can. However, an integral part of our comprehensive pain management plan is to attempt to avoid the use of narcotic medications, as much as possible.
